Bears tame the Huskies
Bears remain unbeaten.

ST. JOSEPH – The Bears returned home since the first week of the season and waiting for them was Portage Northern, a team that presented the Bears with their toughest test of the year.

St. Joseph came in to the game with a 3-0 record and faced a 2-1 Portage Northern team who lost at Lakeshore 24-16.

The Bears got on the board in the first drive of the game when Ryan Kitron kicked a 32 yard field goal to put St. Joe ahead 3-0.

Northern tried to repeat what the Bears did on their opening drive of the game, but Joe Livingston was wide left on a 26 yard attempt. St. Joe had a 3-0 lead after the first quarter.

Turnovers would be a problem for the Huskies in the seconds quarter, St. Joe got on the board early in the quarter, when the Bears punted, but Northern’s Derrick Sanders fumbled the punt. Josh Shoeplein recovered ball at the Northern 15 yard line. Two runs by Alex Rutherford gave St. Joe a 10-0 lead.

The Huskies got their offense in gear and got their first touchdown with 2:42 remaining in the half when Sergio Jackson scored on a 9 yard run to cut the Bears lead to 10-7.

St. Joe responded on the very next possession, taking just under 2 minutes to find the endzone again when Rutherford scored from a yard out to put St. Joe ahead 17-7 with under 40 seconds remaining in the half.

It looked like the Bears were going to take the 10 point lead into the locker room, but another key turnover set up the Bears again as Northern QB Troy Bitterle fumbled the ball on a hit by Schoeplein, St. Joe’s Davion Mitchell recovered the ball at the Huskies 10 yard line with 28 seconds left in the half. James Morris on second down threw a perfect pass to Jake Fratzke with :05 seconds left and the Bears had a 24-7 lead at the half.

Both teams traded interceptions on the opening plays from scrimmage in the third quarter, Northern would find the endzone on their drive after the second interception as Sanders scored from 43 yards out to cut the Bears lead to 24-14.

St. Joe would find the Northern goal line again with 2:48 left in the third quarter when Morris threw a screen pass to Rutherford which he ran for 46 yard touchdown and a 31-14 lead.

Northern responded on the next play as Tyler Holland returned the kickoff 85 yards for the touchdown, Livingston’s point after was blocked and the Bears still had the lead at 31-20.

On the first play of the 4th quarter the Huskies would score again as Bitterle threw a 10 yard touchdown pass to Ryan Smith, Bitterle’s 2-point conversion pass attempt was knocked away and Northern trailed 31-26.

St. Joe’s defense would hold off two fourth quarter drives for the Huskies to hold on to the win, including a double reverse pass attempt by Northern with :08 seconds left. Bitterle’s pass was completed to Derrick Sanders to the St. Joe 15 yard line as time expired.

Alex Rutherford ran for 163 yards and added 46 yards receiving, while scoring 3 touchdowns. James Morris was 10 of 18 passing for 2 touchdowns and an interception.

St. Joe improves to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the Big 16 West and hosts 0-4 (0-2 West) Portage Central next Friday.
