Lakeshore keeps Anchor Trophy with 31-12 win over St. Joe

STEVENSVILLE –– After nearly 60 years of games, The War By the Shore is now all knotted up at 29 wins apiece after Lakeshore won 31-12 at Al Stockman Stadium.

The Bears came into the game with an offense that generated an average of nearly 350 yards a game over the first three contests.  All three victories.

But the Lakeshore defense held St. Joe to just 218 total yards of offense, and only 50 on the ground in the third straight Lancer win over St. Joe.

Lakeshore got on the board first. Following a Bear punt, Lakeshore took 4 plays to go 79 yards, the last 50 of which came on a touchdown pass from Quarterback Joel Brawley to Connor Roberts.  The point after was good and the Lancers had a 7-0 lead.

Lakeshore would expand that lead to 10 points on the first play of the second quarter when Robert Dente made a 25 yard field goal to make it 10-0.

The Lancers would find the endzone two more times before the quarter expired, with 4:55 left to go. Shane Clapp who lined up at quarterback for the trick play threw a 32 yard touchdown pass to Connor Brawley to put Lakeshore up 17-0.

The Lancers would strike again with exactly 2:00 left in the half when Chris Osbord scored on an 80 yard touchdown run on the first play of the Lakeshore drive.    The half would end and the Lancers had a 24-0 lead.

The score would not change until the middle of the third when Lakeshore turned it over on a fumble on a punt return.  St. Joe would drive 48 yards with Jake Sremba taking it 1 yard for the touchdown,  St. Joe would go for two and miss.  Lakeshore had a 24-6 lead.

Lakeshore would respond on the following drive when Corey Hampton scored on a 48 yard run to put the home team ahead 31-6.

St. Joe would take advantage of another Lancer miscue for the final touchdown  A bad snap on a Lakeshore punt would give the Bears the ball at the Lancers 6 yard line.  4 plays later Corey Malone-Hatcher ran for a 1 yard score to provide the final margin of 31-12.

St. Joe falls to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in SMAC West Division play.

With Lakeshore’s win, the series it now tied for the first time since it was 0-0.  Overall St. Joe leads in scoring by just 5 points. 1,040-1,035.
